TOWN OF UNION—An Evansville man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of drunken driving after police say they found him driving a vehicle with a missing rear tire and a young child in the vehicle.

According to a Rock County Sheriff's Office release, Matthew C. Swanson, 35, Evansville, was arrested on suspicion of felony third-offense operating while intoxicated with a passenger under 16 years of age at 12:06 a.m. Saturday at Evansville-Brooklyn Road and Emery Road in the town of Union.

Police were responding to a report Swanson was driving in and out of the ditch in a vehicle that was missing a rear tire, according to the release.

After a city of Evansville patrol officer stopped the vehicle, officers and a Rock County sheriff's deputy discovered a 5-year-old child was a passenger inside, police said.

Swanson had slurred speech and the odor of intoxicants on his breath. He failed a field sobriety test, according to the release.

He was taken to the Rock County Jail, where he was being held pending a court hearing Monday.
