CLINTON--Clinton is not going to win any style points for Friday night’s performance.

The top-seeded and unbeaten Cougars cruised to a WIAA Division 5 opening-round win over Brookfield Academy but went through the motions for most of the second half in a 42-3 victory.

Clinton (10-0) hosts Prairie du Chien (8-2) next Friday in a second-round game.

The Cougars came into the game as the No. 1 rushing team in the state and with the state’s leading rusher in Zach Krause. Clinton finished with only 226 yards on the ground, nearly 200 yards below its season average, while Krause ran for 160 yards and a score.

Clinton coach Jeff Spiwak said his team kept things simple against an overmatched opponent.

“We didn’t want to show a whole lot this game (offensively) and tried some new things,” Spiwak said. “Some different guys got opportunities to play in different spots and that’s a blessing in playoffs.

“The kids know that the effort we got tonight from them will not cut it next week. But we get another home game next week and a chance to play better than we did tonight. That’s most important.”

Clinton took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on Krause’s 4-yard TD run and quarterback Tyler Halsted’s 11-yard scamper.

The Cougars pushed their lead to 21-0 in the second on Krause’s 35-yard blast up the middle with 7:38 left in the half. On the ensuing possession, Connor Mullooly scooped up a fumble at the Brookfield Academy 22 and raced in untouched for a 28-0 lead.

Brookfield Academy (4-6) got its only points of the game with field goal late in the first half, but Clinton answered on Halsted’s 32-yard scoring strike to Grayson Johnson with 32 seconds remaining before halftime.

Clinton got the only points of the second half on a Connor Burns 39-yard interception return with 9:16 to play in the game.

Clinton’s defense limited Brookfield Academy to 161 yards of total offense.

“We got a playoff win and got to rest some kids the second half,” Spiwak said. “It’s obviously going to be a step up for us next week, but our kids will be ready for the challenge.”
