JANESVILLE—A free online service will warn people when their names are used in any recording activity in the Rock County Register of Deeds Office, Register of Deeds Sandy Disrud announced.

The Property Fraud Alert service could help people avoid fraud, according to the news release.

“The threat of mortgage fraud and identity-theft crimes is real, and all too often victims of these types of fraudulent activities are unaware their homes or identity have been stolen,” Disrud said in the release.

Disrud told The Gazette she knows of no one locally who has suffered from this kind of fraud.

The alerts on their own don’t prevent fraud but can alert property owners to take action if possible fraudulent activity has taken place, according to the release.

To subscribe, go online to www.PropertyFraudAlert.com and choose “Rock County, WI“ when prompted, or call 800-728-3858.

Disrud will answer questions about the service. Call her at 608-757-5650.
