Other Views: Now is the time to impeach Trump for nation’s safety
Donald Trump is clearly unfit for the office he holds and poses an immediate threat to the safety and security of this country, which is why I support his impeachment.
I do not come to this decision lightly, but we can no longer afford to delay the impeachment process. The threats are too real.
Donald Trump’s lack of understanding about our nuclear arsenal, his continued provocations towards North Korea and stated interest in using nuclear weapons is why I call on Paul Ryan to begin the impeachment process in earnest.
Speaker Ryan understands these threats, but instead of doing the right thing for the country, he is using his power over the impeachment process as leverage to coerce Donald Trump into doing his bidding. Just last week, he publicly praised Trump’s executive order to unilaterally cut off health insurance subsidies. Paul Ryan is ignoring the threat Trump poses to our national security in order to sabotage our healthcare system and pass a tax reform plan rigged against the middle class.
Impeachment of the President requires proof of “high crimes and misdemeanors,” for which we already have adequate evidence, so there is no excuse for further delay.
Donald Trump is using his elected position to enrich himself and his family. Whether it’s foreign government-sponsored events at Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., or receiving Chinese trademark protection for the Trump brand, Trump has accepted benefits from foreign powers in violation of the Emoluments Clause of the US Constitution and should not remain in office.
Impeachment is a distraction from the issues that matter most to me; like fixing our healthcare system, creating good jobs, and strengthening public education, but Paul Ryan and Donald Trump have proven to be incapable of enacting even modest legislation to provide relief for the millions of US citizens in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands who are struggling.
Our country cannot move forward with Donald Trump in office. Our elected leaders are responsible for the millions of lives that could be impacted if he leads us into war, so it is irresponsible and unethical for them to wait any longer for a better political moment to demand impeachment. The time is now.
I invite all residents of Wisconsin’s First Congressional District to participate in this important discussion by attending a public town hall meeting this Sunday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the Red Oak Restaurant, 4410 200th Ave., in Bristol.
Cathy Myers, D-Janesville, is running for the 1st Congressional District seat.
