Sound Off for Sunday, Oct. 1: Summer school, wiretapping and World War III
On surge in Janesville summer school attendance: I am impressed with Janesville schools and Superintendent Steve Pophal and the things he says. I think the Janesville schools are headed in the right direction.
On proposed apartments near Briar Crest neighborhood: You do not need $1,250- to $1,450-a-month apartments. What you need in this town is affordable housing. There is not enough affordable housing. You’ve got your skyrocketing rents with all the greedy landlords in Janesville wanting more money, and there’s no affordable housing.
On Tuesday column, “10 steps progressives need to take”: In the article by Matt Rothschild, he calls President Trump a fascist, and I beg to differ. This is nothing but an article to make socialists sound so sweet, honest and caring when, in fact, they just want to take over our country, our freedom and our speech. We have seen this already in how so-called progressives really act. There is no freedom of speech if you don’t agree with them. Our freedoms are being eroded by the progressives who have infiltrated the Democratic Party, so please don’t be fooled by false rhetoric.
On DACA: Too bad people don’t educate themselves before opening their mouths. DACA kids are vetted, they go to school, hold down jobs and pay taxes. That’s more than what I can say about a lot of our natural-born kids and adults for that matter. Get over it. These kids need our help, not our prejudice or hate. They contribute. What do you contribute?
On NFL players kneeling for the anthem: To the people who called into Sound Off regarding the kneeling of football players, the players have every right to freedom of speech, and they are assembling legally. If the owners go along with them, that’s fine. None of us knows what it’s like to be a black person if we are white, and I really feel that you people are all wrong in this. The players support their brothers, and there’s no disrespect to the veterans and our men and women in the military.
--People are getting so tired of watching people in the streets rioting, destroying property, burning our flag, looting during hurricane disasters, obstructing free speech, and now the NFL disrespecting our flag and what this nation stands for. Why don’t you put your earrings and your little pink outfits on and move to another country. Shame on you.
--Anybody that kneels down when the national anthem is played should automatically be fired. With the respect they’re not showing and what they’re being paid, I think everybody should shut the TV off on Sundays for the next four weeks and show them that they are not in the right.
On wiretapping: As a former federal government analyst, I can tell you emphatically if you make a phone call to a foreign adversary like Iran, North Korea, Russia, so forth, your conversation will be wiretapped no matter what party you are affiliated with. It happens all the time going back decades. It’s called a security must be done.
On avoiding World War III: Somebody really needs to tell Trump this isn’t a reality show or a playground and his remarks could easily get us into WW III. Somebody really needs to help him mature.
--Tom Brokaw’s “Greatest Generation” among other things highlighted the way in which the country came together to defeat the Japanese and Germans both on the battlefield and at home. With the threat of North Korea and questions swirling around Russia and Iran, will we come together in the same context to preserve our freedom? Let us fervently hope so.
On Wednesday column, “Why our brains make it hard to grapple with global warming”: No, our brains make it hard to sell us man-made global warming because we all know that the climate has been changing as long as there’s been a climate. We also know that it’s been both warmer and colder before, but we’re supposed to believe that the changes now are a catastrophe. They don’t even know if warming is going to be beneficial or harmful.
On gas prices: On Monday in Janesville, gas was $2.44 a gallon for regular at Kwik Trip, and in Madison it was $2.19 for regular. Why is this? I don’t understand how that happens.
