EVANSVILLE--Verona had the top two medalists at the Big Eight Conference golf meet Tuesday in Evansville.

But Middleton put together the most consistent team scores.

Verona's Courtney (77) and Lauren Shorter (79) were the top two individuals, but the Cardinals held off the Wildcats by two strokes, 349-351, to capture the league's tournament title, kicking off the postseason on a gorgeous day at the Evansville Golf Club.

Janesville Parker, behind medal finishes by Sophia Dooman and Ashlyn Burdick, took third at 385. Craig freshman Kallie Lux posted the city's top score for a Craig team that was sixth.

"Our goal was to be in third place, and with this young group, I'm extremely happy and they are, too," Parker coach Mary Ross said. "To have two kids in the top 10 says a lot about our team and their desire to compete."

Dooman, a junior, shot 87 to finish sixth. Burdick shot 91 to take 10th.

"Ashlyn has had a tough couple weeks, but she figured out her game," Ross said. "To medal here is a big deal."

Lux has been battling a knee injury but has fought through it to post some of her best scores of the season. She parred the final four holes to shoot 85 and take fifth.

"Kallie has shot a couple nice rounds now with a bum knee. We'll get her some rest and hopefully recharge her batteries," Craig coach Alex Schaar said. "We've had a really good week along, so we're just chugging along and trying to make sectionals."

Craig hosts a WIAA Division 1 regional that includes Parker, Milton, Badger, Delavan-Darien, Elkhorn, Beloit Memorial, Burlington and Fort Atkinson on Sept. 28.
