Former Rock County jailer stands mute to theft charges
JANESVILLE—A former Rock County jailer accused of stealing from an inmate stood mute Monday in Rock County Court, and not-guilty pleas were entered on his behalf.
Mitchell Wellnitz, 22, of 8727 E. Avalon Road, Avalon, also waived his right to a preliminary hearing Monday.
Wellnitz faces felony theft, misconduct in office and misdemeanor theft charges. He is accused of stealing a gold chain necklace and ring worth almost $3,000 from an inmate while working at the jail. He was fired after the accusations surfaced.
Inmates’ valuables are kept in a storage room, and that’s where investigators believe Wellnitz took it from, sheriff's officials have said.
The necklace and ring were sold to a Madison pawn shop for $700.
