DELAVAN—Exactly what is it that makes a good scarecrow?

Is it the clothing, the hat or the facial expression? Maybe it's all about size or proper stuffing.

You be the judge this Saturday when the 17th annual Scarecrow Festival converges on downtown Delavan.

Scarecrows began surfacing on the city's light poles around Labor Day, and they will remain standing until mid-October. Fest-goers can vote for their favorite straw supermodels as part of the event's annual contest. Winners will be selected at 2:30 p.m. and rewarded with gift certificates to Remember When, 313 E. Walworth Ave.

The festival also will feature the live painting of the city's 20th historic mural, which will carry an early industry theme. The mural will go up on the Delavan Fitness Center, 114 N. 3rd St., and it will be worked on all day during the festival.

Event organizers also plan to offer their annual duck raffle, which will award cash prizes of $200 for first place, $100 for second and $50 for third. A variety of other prizes donated by local businesses also will be handed out.

Along with the mural painting, other all-day events include a quilt show downtown and self-guided Walldog mural walking tours.
