WHITEWATER--UW-Whitewater’s path to the NCAA Division III World Series got steeper Friday night.

The Warhawks lost their Midwest Regional game to UW-La Crosse 5-2 at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium. The loss means Whitewater will have to win the rest of their regional games in the double-elimination tournament to advance to the World Series.

Whitewater had defeated the Eagles in six of their seven games this season, and took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the second. Catcher Mike Aiello singled to drive home Steve Chamberlain.

La Crosse responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, but Whitewater went up 2-1 in the third when Brett Krause scored on a fielders choice grounder off the bat of Matt Wary.

The Eagles then took the lead for good with a two-run bottom of the third, and added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings.

Whitewater ace Austin Jones pitched a complete game and striking out seven. Only three of the Eagles’ five runs were earned. Jones fell to 8-3.

The Warhawks managed just five hits off three La Crosse pitchers. Whitewater had the tying run at the plate with runners on first and second with just one out in the ninth, but could not get the needed hit.

The Warhawks (36-8) are scheduled to play St. Thomas (Minnesota) at 10 a.m. today in an elimination game.
