WHITEWATER--St. Norbert got off to a false start, and the UW-Whitewater baseball team made the Green Knights pay.

The Warhawks shut down a first-inning threat by St. Norbert and then scored three runs in their half of the inning en route to a 4-2 victory in the first game of the NCAA Midwest Regional at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium on Thursday.

The win in the double-elimination tournament sends the Warhawks to another matchup against WIAC rival UW-La Crosse at 4:30 p.m. today.

The Green Knights appeared ready to take an early lead in the first off Warhawks starter Heath Renz. The first two batters, Derek Klegin and Hunter Larson, singled, putting runners on first and second.

Renz, a Jefferson High graduate, responded by getting a strikeout and two groundouts.

Whitewater struck in its half of the inning. Jordan Kuczynski and Blake Fleischman each doubled to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead. After one out, Steve Chamberlain joined the double parade, making it 2-0. Chamberlain later scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Wary.

St. Norbert scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, but only one was earned.

Whitewater added its final run in the fifth when Cal Aldridge knocked in Kevin White.

Westin Wuethrich came on in relief of Renz and pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and two walks and striking out five.

Mike Nompleggi earned his seventh save by pitching a scoreless ninth.

The Warhawks now face La Crosse, a team they are 6-1 against this season with a 51-24 run differential.
