JANESVILLE

Janesville Craig’s baseball team made quick work of Madison Memorial on Thursday.

The Cougars opened up an 8-0 lead after two innings and coasted to a 10-0 Big Eight Conference win at Riverside Park. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth due to the 10-run rule.

Jack Blomgren fired a complete-game one-hitter, struck out eight and allowed only two baserunners.

Third-ranked Craig improved to 20-2 overall and 14-2 in conference. The Cougars moved within one win of clinching at least a share of their third straight Big Eight title.

Blomgren said winning conference is important but not the ultimate goal.

“We’re pleased with where we’re at as a team but not satisfied,” Blomgren said. “Our first goal is to win conference and then make a long tournament run.

“The key is going to be continuing to put together good at-bats, playing good defense and continue to get good pitching.”

Craig got on the board in its first at-bat, and as usual Blomgren was the catalyst. The leadoff hitter walked and then stole second and third on back-to-back pitches. Austin Kraus also walked and immediately stole second to put runners on second and third with no outs. Jacob Campbell followed with a two-run double off the fence in left, and he scored on Luke Malmanger’s RBI single for a 3-0 lead.

The Cougars added five more runs in the second, sending nine batters to the plate. Evan Spry’s two-run single keyed the rally, while Campbell picked up his third RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Blomgren was on cruise control on the hill. The senior right-hander and University of Michigan recruit retired the side in order in the second, third and fifth and struck out five of the first seven batters he faced.

“Jack pitched ahead all game and had some zip on fastball,” Craig coach Victor Herbst said. “I thought we played well in all three aspects of the game.

“It’s nice to have a game like this once awhile. It’s quick, everybody gets a chance to contribute and it got us one step closer to a conference title."

Craig plays a nonconference game Monday at Jefferson.
