The UW-Whitewater baseball team can sit back early this afternoon after winning two games Friday in the WIAC Tournament at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

The No. 1-seeded Warhawks defeated Oshkosh 8-4, and then No. 2-seeded La Crosse 12-2. The victories mean the winner of today’s noon game between La Crosse and Stevens Point will take on Whitewater, needing to beat the Warhawks twice in the double-elimination tournament.

The winner of that game will have to beat the Warhawks in both the 3 p.m. game, and the 6 p.m. game to earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.

If the Warhawks win the 3 p.m. game, they move on to the NCAA tournament.

The Warhawks are 34-6 overall.

Jefferson High graduate Heath Renz earned the victory against Oshkosh. He improved to 8-0 on the season, allowing seven his and striking out 10 in eight innings.

Designated hitter Jeff Szubert drove in three runs, and Cal Aldridge added two RBI.

In the second game, Austin Jones pitched all eight innings to improve to 8-2. He didn’t allow an earned run and gave up just three hits while striking out eight.

Aldridge had three RBI, and Kevin White and Jordan Kuczynski each had two.
