Jets take series opener 4-1
Joseph Abate and the Janesville Jets took care of business quickly Friday night.
Abate scored two goals and added an assist to lead Janesville to a 4-1 win over Fairbanks in the opening-game of the NAHL Midwest Division championship best-of-5 playoff series at the Janesville Ice Arena.
The Jets opened up a 4-0 lead before the Ice Dogs scored late in the third period to avoid the shutout.
Abate, a University of Wisconsin recruit, got Janesville on the board quickly as he scored at 1:36 of the first. Frank Sullivan made it 2-0 in the opening period on assists from LordAnthony Grissom and Michael Maloney.
Chris Dodero, who had a goal and an assist for Janesville, pushed the lead to 3-0 at 5:47 of the second. Abate capped off the scoring with his second goal, an empty-netter, at 16:36 of the third.
Jacob Barczewski earned the win between the pipes, stopping 19 shots.
Game two is today at 7 p.m.
If Janesville wins tonight, the series shifts to Fairbanks, Alaska for games three and four.
If Fairbanks wins tonight, game three will be played at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Ice Arena.
