BELOIT--A Beloit man was arrested on suspicion of his eighth intoxicated driving offense early Friday morning.

Gene Williams, 61, was pulled over in Beloit by a Rock County sheriff's deputy at 2:36 a.m. after he turned north into the southbound lanes of Riverside Drive from Henry Avenue, according to a sheriff's office news release.

The deputy smelled alcohol on Williams' breath and arrested Williams after field sobriety tests.

Williams was locked in the Rock County Jail pending his initial court appearance later Friday. He also was cited for driving left of center.
