Coach Steve Heilman did not like the way his Janesville Parker softball team walked through their Big Eight Conference 10-run loss Tuesday against Beloit.

The Vikings responded to his pep talk after the game.

Parker scored three runs in the first and fourth innings and held off Madison Memorial's seventh-inning rally for a 6-5 Big Eight victory at the Janesville Youth Sports Complex on Thursday afternoon.

“We came to play today,” Heilman said. “We did a lot of good things. We did a good job of moving runners along with bunts. It was a good team win for us.”

Junior Sydney Peterson made her second start of the season and pitched into the seventh inning. The Spartans scored a run in the top of the seventh to move within a run, but sophomore Jeni Malphy came in and closed out the win.

“The way we were playing, I wasn't too worried,” Heilman said. “They were more aggressive today. They responded the way I wanted them to.”

Jordyn Nenno hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Maddie Byrne led the Vikings' seven-hit attack by going 2-for-2 with an RBI.

The Vikings play at Middleton today and have a doubleheader at Madison West on Saturday.
