Kim Olson is happy with Trump (“Right man for the right time,” Monday) and writes a very judgmental, derisive observation about those lying, demonizing, non-apologizing, subversive, non-constitutional, self-righteous, criminal mentality, extremely bad “liberal” people. Olson has made himself to be judge and jury of these “liberals.” Who elevated Olson to this position? These “liberals” may well be Olson’s neighbors, church members, work mates, etc., but they are still all very bad people

In the words of Lawrence O’Donnell: “What did ‘liberals’” do that was so offensive to Olson and the Republican Party? After all, liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. Liberals passed Obamacare.

What did Olson’s conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things, every one. So when Kim Olson demeans the word “liberal” as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won’t work. Because we “liberals” will pick up that label, and we “liberals” will wear it as a badge of honor.

The Kim Olsons of our country are entitled to their opinions, but they really expose themselves as mean spirited with their illogical public rants against their fellow citizens. That’s OK, Kim Olson. We “liberals” forgive you.

Kim Olson’s claim in Monday’s Gazette that we’ve never had such resistance after a presidential election ignores history, even recent history. Olson forgets, or conveniently ignores, that Sen. Mitch McConnell immediately vowed to block all of Obama’s actions, and he did, refusing even to grant a hearing to Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, despite his having a year left in power.

Olson continues to demonize liberals, calling us the “darkness of humanity” and insisting we have a “criminal mentality.” The American Heritage Dictionary says “liberal” comes from the Latin word “liberalis,” from liber, meaning free, and defines it as “Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry”; “Favoring proposals for reform, open for new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded”; and “Tending to give freely; generous.”

Olson calls Trump a “true blessing” who has “done more in two months in office than the last four presidents combined.” Apparently Olson loves Trump’s removal of environmental protections, though I don’t understand how letting big business re-poison our air, land and water will make this country great again. But such is Olson’s mindset.
