UW-Whitewater baseball team sweeps UW-La Crosse

UW-Whitewater went to 4-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a doubleheader sweep over visiting UW-La Crosse on Sunday.

The No. 4-ranked Warhawks won all four games in the weekend series over the No. 15-ranked Eagles (10-9, 0-4 in the WIAC).

The Warhawks scored a run in the 12th inning to win the first game 4-3. Whitewater had an easier time in the second game, grinding out a 6-2 victory.

In the first game, junior first baseman Blake Fleischman led off the bottom of the 12th with a walk-off, solo home run to deep right field.

Second baseman Steve Chamberlain hit two solo shots and went 3-for-5 in the victory. The two teams combined to leave 22 runners on base in the three-hour, 33-minute game.

Mike Nompleggi pitched four scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory and go to 2-0 this season.

Ankur Shah pitched a complete game and did not allow an earned run in the second game. Shah improved to 3-0 with his six-strikeout performance.

Brett Krause went 3-for-5, and Fleischman went 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs scored.

The Warhawks (16-2) host Concordia (Wis.) for a single nonconference game Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Miller Stadium.
