A sellout crowd left the Janesville Ice Arena disappointed Thursday night.

Joe Marcoullier made 40 saves and Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup scored the only goal to lead Coulee Region to a 1-0 NAHL win over the Janesville Jets.

Janesville outshot Coulee Region 40-18 but could not get the puck past Marcoullier.

A Jets goal with six seconds left in regulation was disallowed due to goalie interference. The head official ruled that Marcoullier left the crease and was not given a clear path by a Janesville player to get back to the crease.

Janesville coach Joe Dibble was not pleased with the call but said there's not much that can be done about it.

“The ref told me that their goalie was bumped going back to the net,” Dibble said. “Well if that's the case, why did he give the signal for a goal?

“But it is what it is. And luckily for us, we've put ourselves in a position where we're already in the playoffs and have already won our division.”

The 1,211 fans in attendance set a franchise record for the Jets and were loud from the opening face-off.

Neither team mustered any type of threat in the first period. Janesville, which saw its six-game home winning streak snapped, outshot the Chill 12-5 in the first.

The Jets had two shorthanded opportunities in the second period, including Kip Hoffmann's shot midway through the period that Marcoullier swatted away.

Schmidt-Svejstrup got the game-winner at 5:01 of the second when he beat Jacob Barczewski with a wrister into the upper right corner of the net. Barczewski was solid between the pipes, finishing with 17 saves.

“At this point of the year, you need your best player to be your goaltender,” Dibble said. “And tonight, that was the case for them. But I thought Jacob played well for us, too.”

Janesville is off until Tuesday when it will attempt to snap a three-game losing streak at the Springfield Jr. Blues.

Dibble said his team needs to refocus and get its groove back heading into the postseason.

“At this point of the season, everybody has skill, everybody has a good work ethic and everybody has a good goalie,” Dibble said. “It comes down to willing yourself to win and emptying your tanks.”
