Your Views: Environment under attack like it was years ago
From The Gazette two weeks ago, these headlines sound like a war assault on our environment: “Environment programs facing deep cutbacks, “Draft plan would reduce EPA budget by about 25 percent,” “Officials to review Clipper pipeline,” “Group: Great Lakes cuts ‘drastic,’” “Mayors say ecological cuts undermine restoration efforts,” “DNR gives OK to sand plant that threatens wetlands” and “Trump to roll back fuel-economy rules.”
And then there’s this regarding the brave resistance: “More than 100 protest possible pipeline” and “UW-Whitewater students, activists gather for rally.”
Those of us above 50 years old remember the attacks of 40 years ago on the environment: the burning Cuyahoga River, Love Canal and the pronounced death of Lake Erie. These and other environmental warnings led to the defense of our environment through the creation of the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Once again, our environment is under attack. We all must speak up and join the resistance by defending our air, water and our very state. Let Rep. Paul Ryan and the Republicans know that this is not acceptable.
