JANESVILLE—A Janesville man suspected of firing several shots from a handgun into the air early Monday morning was arrested on charges including endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon, police said.

No one was injured.

The man was very drunk, had a dispute with his wife and went outside, apparently venting his frustration by firing the gun, police Sgt. Brian Vaughn said.

Police responded at 12:06 a.m. Monday to a report of gunshots in the 2300 block of Garden Drive on the city's south side. Officers heard multiple gunshots.

At about the same time, Rock County dispatchers received a call from a woman inside the house who said a man was inside and responsible for firing the gun, according to the release.

After several attempts, officers made contact with Michael Howard, 59, of 2332 Garden Drive. Police learned Howard had fired several shots from a handgun, according to the release.

Howard surrendered to police without incident, but after he was in custody, he threatened officers, saying he would shoot them in the head, Vaughn said.

Vaughn said police recovered three shells, but others might have been hidden in the snow.

Howard also was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct while armed, threats to law enforcement officer and resisting an officer, according to the release.
