Xtra Points: WIAA boys hoops tourney begins Tuesday
The road to the Kohl Center begins Tuesday night.
The WIAA boys basketball tournament begins with regional quarterfinals that night, and some two and a half weeks later, 20 teams from around the state will play at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Do we have an area team that might find its way there?
In Division 1, Janesville Craig has a team loaded with seniors who are hungry to make a deep run. The Cougars, seeded sixth, have shown they can compete with some of the top teams in their sectional, splitting season series with second-seeded Madison Memorial and fifth-seeded Beloit.
The Division 3 bracket should be especially compelling. Evansville, led by senior guard Brennen Banks, is seeded second in what is a very impressive collection of D3 teams. Lake Mills is the top seed. Beloit Turner, with the prolific one-two punch of Alec Fruin and Nacio Villarreal, is the No. 3 seed and could see Evansville in a tantalizing regional final game. But the Trojans will likely need to get by high-scoring East Troy to get there.
Gazette sports editor Eric Schmoldt and writer John Barry break down the boys brackets in an episode of Xtra Points.
