To say that the Rock County Fury were looking forward to a rematch with rival Metro Lynx on Tuesday might have been an understatement.

And now the area girls co-op hockey team is one victory away from a second straight trip to the WIAA state tournament.

The Fury avenged a tie and a loss to the Lynx in the regular season with a dominating 6-1 victory in a sectional semifinal at Madison Ice Arena.

“They believe. This is their team, and it's the same situation as last year,” said head coach Dave Soddy, whose team is once again a No. 3 seed, just as it was when it made it to state last year. “They buy into our system. We made changes over the last two weeks, and they understood them.

“These girls love and care about each other, and it's easy to see that. They came to the rink today ready to play.”

Anne Runde and Maggy Henschler had a goal and an assist each for Rock County.

Cammi Ganshert put the Fury on the board with a goal at 6:42 of the first. Henschler made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal less than six minutes later.

Runde made it 3-0 at 3:38 of the second, and although Metro Lynx cut the deficit to two goals just 10 seconds later, the Fury scored three times in the third to pull away.

Rock County has now outscored two playoff opponents 12-1.

McKaylie Buescher made 21 saves to earn the win.

“The Lynx are very aggressive in front of the net. They like to throw the puck in and crash hard on a goalie,” Soddy said. “McKaylie had a very quick glove tonight. The only goal she gave up was on a breakaway, and she stopped a couple of those, as well.”

Now the Fury earn another rematch. They'll take on top-seeded Sun Prairie at 7 p.m. Saturday at Sun Prairie Ice Arena.

Sun Prairie won the first two meetings, 2-1 and 4-1.

“They're a hot team right now, but our girls are really looking forward to the challenge,” Soddy said. “We know each other very well, but I feel like we're a very different team than we were three weeks ago.

“We're building a family and a tradition.”
