The Rock County Fury might be taking a page from the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team.

The “We Are Family” theme was discussed after the arrea's co-op girls hockey team dusted off Viroqua 6-0 in a WIAA regional final game Thursday night at the Edwards Ice Arena.

“We came together finally, as a team,” Janesville Craig junior Zoie Steig said. “Just keep doing what we're doing.”

“Everybody is a family,” Janesville Parker junior Kaitlynn Beyer said.

McKaylie Buescher had to make five saves, and Sara Varga had two in the shutout.

Milton High junior defenseman Danielle Heitsman provided the first goal, drilling a blue- line slap shot. Craig High's Annie Runde got the assist on what was the only score of the period.

Fury coach Dave Soddy told his team to stay calm, and to just to play the offense and defense they know.

The second period was a back-and-forth battle, with multiple close calls for Rock County. Runde put the Fury ahead by two with 20 seconds remaining, with the assist by Craig High forward Mya Maslonka.

The Fury put the game away with four third-period goals.

Milton High forward Ally Burke was stopped on a breakaway, but Heitsman scored the second of her three goals to give the Fury a commanding 3-0 lead.

Heitsman, Milton junior Maggie Henschler and Maslonka scored the final three goals.

Henschler's goal got the crowd particularly excited as she split the defense and made a diving shot for the 5-0 lead.

“We've been taking our time getting good, quality shots,” Soddy said, noting that's been a big focus in practice recently.

The team has been focusing a lot on their breakout plays and has been running two separate back checks, Soddy said.

The players responded.

“We worked hard and made some great plays,” Beyer said.

The Fury, 14-7-1 with a four-game winning streak, play the winner of Friday night's Baraboo-Middleton regional final in a sectional semifinal.
