Evansville/Albany's wrestling team got the hot start it needed Tuesday night.

The Blue Devils simply couldn't sustain it against a tradition-rich, deep Lodi program.

Lodi bounced back from an early 12-point deficit to beat Evansville/Albany 45-33 in a WIAA Division 2 team sectional semifinal at Edgerton High.

Lodi went on to defeat River Valley 33-32 in the sectional final, earning a trip to team state.

Evansville/Albany's season continues with seven wrestlers competing at individual sectionals Saturday in Richland Center.

"We knew we needed pins early and got off to a good start," Evansville/Albany coach Rob Kostroun said. "It was a solid team effort, we're just a little short.

"We're minus a weight class right now at 106, but even so, we came to compete and came to win. Lodi is just a little better right now."

Nolan Kicmol, the state's top-ranked D2 wrestler at 145, and Tyler Schmidt, an honorable mention at 152, opened the dual with wins by pinfall to give Evansville/Albany a 12-0 lead.

Lodi fought back, and the lead changed hands five times.

Evansville/Albany 285-pounder Branden Lange, ranked 12th, pinned his opponent to give his team its last lead at 24-21.

But Evansville/Albany was then forced to forfeit at 106 pounds. Jared Miller, who was ranked or honorable mention for much of the season, was injured at the Rock Valley Conference meet two weekends ago and is out for the year. Evansville had no replacement.

"He's a good kid, but that's part of sports," Kostroun said when asked if he pondered the what-if of having Miller in the lineup. "Things are going to happen, and you've got to be able to rise above it and plug another guy in. Unfortunately we didn't have another guy."

The forfeit gave Lodi the lead for good at 27-24, and it filled with pins at 113 and 120 to seize full control.

Other Evansville/Albany winners on the night were Chase Katzenmeyer (pin at 126), Ben Barmore (decision, 138) and Lucius Rinehart (pin, 195).

"We still have some things we want to accomplish with some individuals, but team-wise I don't know how we'd squeeze more out of them," Kostroun said of his team, which advanced to sectionals for a fourth straight year. "We're proud of them; they've done a good job."
