MONROE—Three teenagers died after a car crash south of Monroe on Friday.

According to the Green County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, Gage P. Noble, 16, of rural Monroe was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Anya T. L. Teasdale, 16, and Joseph T. Wyss, 15, both of Monroe, were airlifted to University Hospital, Madison. Both died there Saturday.

The driver of the other vehicle, Jennifer L. Hopkins, 35, of rural Monroe remains hospitalized in serious condition.

The crash happened at 2:20 p.m. Friday in the town of Clarno, just south of Monroe.

A sedan driven by Noble was traveling west on Melvin Road when it failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Clarno Road, according to a news release from the Green County Sheriff's Office. The sedan struck a Chevrolet Suburban driven by Hopkins.

Teasdale and Wyss were passengers in the sedan.

Monroe High School held a candlelight vigil on the town square Saturday night, and many school district activities were canceled for the weekend. Counseling also is being offered Sunday at the high school.

"There are no words to express the pain of the loss we are experiencing today," a message on the high school's Facebook page said. "While we struggle to understand this awful tragedy, we take comfort in our friends, our family and our community. We are thankful for all that came together to provide strength and support for our students."

Speed is being considered a factor in the crash, according to the sheriff's department.
