WAUKESHA—Evansville/Albany knew it was taking a big step up in class Friday night.

The unbeaten Blue Devils had to go on the road and play Division 3 powerhouse Waukesha Catholic Memorial.

As it turns out, it was too big of a step.

Alex Bray threw four first-half touchdown passes to lead Catholic Memorial to a 42-8 win in a WIAA Division 3 second-round game.

Evansville/Albany, which finished 10-1. started the game well with a 17-play, 73-yard drive but failed to convert on fourth-and-4 at the Catholic Memorial 4. It was all Crusaders after that. Catholic Memorial (9-2) scored on all four of its first-half possessions and led 28-0 at the break. The Crusaders averaged 12.6 yards per play in the first half.

“We just got beat by a better team. Period,” Evansville/Albany coach Ron Grovesteen said. “We've got no excuses.

“They play in a Division 1 conference and are very good. We're a very good Division 3 team.”

Following its fourth-down stop on the first series of the game, Catholic Memorial went to work. Bray hit Max Cooper on a 43-yard scoring play on the Crusaders' first possession to make it 7-0, and the duo hooked up again on a 50-yard strike with four minutes left in the half to push the lead to 21-0. Catholic Memorial put the game away with Bray's 34-yard pass to Matthew Lechner on the last play of the first half as the Blue Devils went to the locker room trailing 28-0.

Bray came in averaging 110 yards passing per game but had 165 the first half with four TDs.

“Their speed on the (artificial) turf hurt us,” Grovesteen said. “And we made some mistakes that were very uncharacteristic of our team. But good teams will do that to you.

“We came in wanting to run the ball and control clock, and we did that our first drive. We just couldn't finish.”

Evansville/Albany got its first points with 3:14 left when Andrew Berra blocked a Catholic Memorial punt out of the end zone. The Blue Devils scored again with six seconds left on Zach Mielke's 29-yard TD pass to Nate Redders.

Catholic Memorial plays at unbeaten Kewaskum in a third-round game next Friday.
