JANESVILLE—Aglio Ristorante will close its doors this weekend to make way for a new restaurant owned by the woman who once ran the Speakeasy in the same spot.

Aglio owners John Sheck and Amy Johnson announced the closing Wednesday in a Facebook post that alluded to a new restaurant.

In an interview with The Gazette, Sheck said he, Johnson and former Speakeasy owner Anita Karl finalized the decision Wednesday to close the Italian restaurant Saturday and venture into American fare.

Karl owns the building, 19 N. High St., where Aglio is located.

Aglio has dished up Italian food for two years in Janesville. The restaurant moved to its current location last year from 12 S. Main St.

Since moving, the business hasn't been enough to keep up with overhead costs, Sheck said.

“The support was beautiful, but it wasn't enough,” he said.

Johnson and Sheck will continue do special events and catering.

Aglio will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday with a closing party starting at 9 p.m. Saturday. The party will feature a buffet, drink specials and music.

The goal is to open the new restaurant, which does not have a name yet, Thursday, July 16.

Sheck and Johnson will help Karl open the restaurant and assist with daily operations, Sheck said. The space will become more of a casual, rustic bar and grill, Sheck said, but it will not undergo any major renovations.

The target audience is people ages 25 to 55.

The idea came up in a conversation about a month ago between Karl, Sheck and Johnson.

“Our guests were great to us. I really love her new idea and vision for this place,” Sheck said, adding that this new venture is more of what Janesville is looking for.
