Festival on the Rock runs Sept. 5-7 in town of Beloit

TOWN OF BELOIT--The town of Beloit's annual Festival on the Rock starts Friday. Here are the details:

When:  Friday, Sept., 5: 4 p.m.–midnight; Saturday, Sept. 6, 9 a.m.–midnight; Sunday, Sept. 7, 9 a.m.–6 p.m.

Where:  Preservation Park, 3444 N. Highway 51, Beloit.

Cost: Free admission, free parking and free music.

Why: To raise money for the town to continue improving Preservation Park and to help local schools.

Proceeds from past events have helped pay for a play structure, a parking lot, a walking path, gazebo and baseball diamond improvements. This year, the committee plans to use money raised for park improvements, a government e-meeting project at Turner High School and a guided reading program at Townview Elementary.

New this year: A CrimeStoppers 5K Fun Run/Walk will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday with check in at 7:30. All participants will receive a drink, snack and T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded for the first place male and female finisher.

Also new is the Viskas Studios' Kid's Movie Night at 7 p.m. Saturday and adult hot rod trike races Sunday.

Idol contest: The Boundaries Bar & Grill's Festival on the Rock Idol singing competition will feature singers who auditioned throughout August. The semifinals will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday with the finals from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Audience members can vote for their favorite singer, with the winner taking home $2,014.

Live music: The follow bands will take the stage: Soul to Soul, 6 p.m. Friday; South Bound, 8 p.m. Friday; Grey Matter Mechanics, 3 p.m. Saturday; 89 MOJO, 5 p.m. Saturday; Black Top Kings, 7 p.m. Saturday; Jamie Campbell & the Redneck Romeos, 9 p.m. Saturday.

Patch Products sale: The annual Patch Toy & Game Sale will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and feature educational and family games, toys and puzzles for all ages, as well as classroom activities. More than 200 toys and games will be at wholesale prices.

The festival also includes: Bean bag and softball tournaments, professional kart races, Beloit Bombshells Roller Derby, the Cardboard Boat Regatta, craft vendors, carnival rides, boat rides, fireworks and food and beverage tents.
