Vira Lavinia Palombi, age 96, passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Woods Crossing in Brodhead.

She was born April 23, 1918 in Beloit, the daughter of Walter and Lavinia (Acker) Gornet. Vira was raised on her parent's farm bordering Turtle Creek in rural Beloit. From this farm she rode her pony to attend Shopiere Congregational Church and Hart Country School. She graduated from Beloit Memorial High School in 1936 and Swedish American School of Nursing in Rockford, Illinois in 1940.

Vira married Frank Palombi on April 19, 1940 in Dubuque, Iowa. They moved from Rockford, IL to Orfordville, WI in 1951. They farmed until 1977. Vira and Frank were married for 65 years.

Her career as a nurse included working at Beloit Memorial Hospital, Rock County Pinehurst TB Sanitarium, Parkview School District, and Rock County Public Health. Vira was active in Spring Valley 4-H as a leader, a member of Spring Valley Homemakers, a member of Orfordville Lutheran Church, and a Swedish American Alumni.

Survivors are her children: 3 sons, Randall (Anita Kammerer) of Orfordville, Robert of Hayward, and Thomas (Billie) of Orfordville; 5 daughters, Carol (Royce ) Schultz of Loveland, CO, Dr. Barbara Palombi (husband Jon Vawter) of Lawton, OK, Karen Macaulay (friend Dan Fabrycki) of Berlin, Elaine (Bill) Smallwood of Selmer, TN, and Susan (Mark) Bunton of Rochester, MN; 13 grandchildren: Peggy, Lynne Anne, Michael, Joe, Sarah, Ian, Graham, Chad, Billy, Natalie, Stephanie, Jonathan, and Jessica; 4 great-grandchildren: Roy, Ross, Audrina, and Emma; a special niece Cindy (Dave) Palombi of Juda; and brothers-in-law Howard Palombi, Benton, TX and Peter Palombi, Richmond, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank; an infant son Gordan; and son-in-law, Don Macaulay.

Funeral services will be held at the ORFORDVILLE LUTHERAN CHURCH at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 2, 2014. Burial will be in Orfordville Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at Newcomer-Silverthorn Chapel on the Hill, Highway 11 and South Coon Island Road, Orfordville from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday September 1, 2014. Memorials may be made to the Easter Seals Camp Wawbeek.
