High school football: Delavan-Darien wins suspended game

DELAVAN—Jesse Collins continues to impress.

The Delavan-Darien senior quarterback threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Comets to a 37-13 nonconference win Saturday over Walworth Big Foot.

The game was suspended in the third quarter Friday night due to lightning with Delavan-Darien leading 14-7.

The Comets scored 23 unanswered points Saturday to pull away. Alex Grover caught back-to-back TD passes from Collins to make it 28-7, and Fabias Shipman’s 30-yard touchdown run pushed the lead to 35-7.

Delavan-Darien took an early 7-0 lead Friday night on sophomore Jake Benzing’s 3-yard run, but Big Foot (1-1) tied the game on Nigel Manning’s 23-yard touchdown pass from Brett Morris.

The Comets took a 14-7 halftime lead when sophomore Ethan Cesarz caught a 63-yard scoring strike from Collins.

Collins finished 16-for-23 for 255 yards and added 62 yards rushing.

Delavan-Darien is 2-0 heading into Friday’s Southern Lakes opener at Wilmot.

The game was delayed 1 hour 45 minutes by lightning.

Clinton quarterback Derek Severson carried 26 times for 134 yards and a touchdown, and running back Jordan Jones had a 52-yard touchdown in the loss. The Cougars completed just 3 of 17 passes.

Clinton plays at East Troy on Friday.
