FORT ATKINSON-- Artist Thomas Jewell has several goals on his painting to-do list. Another of those goals will be fulfilled with his “Spirit of the Horse” show opening reception on Thursday, Sept. 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Jones Family Gallery in the Dwight Foster Public Library, 209 Merchants Ave., Fort Atkinson.

“Spirit of the Horses,” featuring some 50 horse paintings, will be on display until September 30 during regular library hours.

“I have always had the idea to do a series of paintings to highlight the amazing spirit of the horse,” Jewell said. “I have been fortunate to have horses involved a lot of my life. My first-hand experience in having horses has given me direct insight to this very special creature. This show enables me to highlight the intelligence, stamina, courage, athleticism, adaptability and outright elegant beauty of the magnificent horse”.

Jewell's general philosophy for his paintings is to capture the mood or feeling of his subject to provide the viewer with a visual connection to the painting's theme.

“Horses have individual personalities just as we do,” he said. “I want the viewer to feel the magic and mystery of each horse or group of horses in these paintings.”

Jewell's work has been exhibited throughout Wisconsin as well as several other states. His paintings have received several awards over the years and are included in numerous corporate and private collections. He continues to paint a variety of subjects and plans for future shows and gallery exhibits.

His affiliations include Oil Painters of America, the Whitewater Arts Alliance and the Visionary Artists Group.
