JANESVILLE—Dan Ouimet started the season with a bang for Janesville Craig’s football team.

The senior speedster ran the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown.

Craig’s Aristide Serrano ended the game with a 32-yard touchdown run as time expired.

In between, the Cougars did little wrong Friday in a 58-12 pasting of Beloit Memorial at a steamy Monterey Stadium.

Joe Glowacki added what is believed to be a city-record 50-yard field goal as Craig opened the Big Eight Conference season in style.

“It’s a great start to the season, but our guys are far from being satisfied, and that’s what we talked about afterward,” Craig coach Ben McCormick said.

“There’s a lot to learn and a lot to improve on, even in a win, and that’s what we’ll take from this.”

The Purple Knights won’t take much of anything from the loss.

In Rodney Wedig’s first game as coach after a successful tenure at Big Foot High, Beloit fell behind 40-0 after one quarter and was clearly outclassed on every level. Craig rushed for 358 yards, including five runs of 40 yards or more.

Ouimet scampered untouched for a score to start the game and added two more first-quarter rushing touchdowns as Craig raced out to a 43-0 lead.

Leading 49-6 with time running down in the first half, McCormick elected to let Glowacki try a 50-yard field goal on the last play. The senior calmly blasted the kick toward the uprights and through for a 52-6 halftime lead.

“That was great for Joe,” McCormick said, “but he’s made them in practice, so we figured why not give it a shot.”

The second half took less than a half hour to play as the running clock brought on by Craig’s 35-point lead sped the game up.

Craig’s only points of the second half came on Serrano’s run on the final play of the game.

The Cougars now switch their attention to crosstown rival Janesville Parker and the annual Battle for the Monterey Rock.

“Obviously, we’ve got a big game coming up this week, so staying focused and making a point of improving each and every day as a team is my main concern,” McCormick said.

“Parker is always a great game, and we’re excited about the opportunity to play them.”
