Jean Alice (Lipke) Atkins, Merritt Island, FL (1925-2014)
November 5, 1925 - August 9, 2014
Jean Alice (Lipke) Atkins of Merritt Island, FL, formerly of Waterford, MI, died Aug. 9, 2014, at 88 years of age. She was born in Janesville, WI, Nov. 5, 1925, one of four girls born to George Frederick and Ella Emily Lipke. Jean started her collegiate studies at the University of Michigan (and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha) and received her degree at Oakland U (BA, history with honors, 1984). Her career of choice was her family, her community, her friends - for whom she was a reservoir of will and goodwill, provided with humor, selflessness, faith, and famed baked goods. It was not only what she did, but her way of doing it that earned her Waterford Woman of the Year in 1978. Her love of reading brought her to serve in Waterford, as president of the Friends of the Library, the Book Review, and the Library Advisory Board. Her organizational skills got her recruited for Board positions as secretary to numerous civic organizations, including among many, the Drayton Plains Nature Center, the Williams Lake Elementary School P.T.A., and the Waterford Historical Society. Besides Board positions within the volunteer community, she was an active member for many other causes and groups in Waterford, and she also became a certified Master Gardener. She was a member of the, then, Drayton Plains United Presbyterian Church, beginning in 1956, and was a Deacon-Aide, followed by membership in Pineda Presbyterian Church (FL). She was a member of the Oakland U Alumni Association. Before marriage she was employed at the Pontiac Press (now Oakland Press), and early in her marriage was an elementary school substitute teacher for the Waterford Township School District.
Jean was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 62 years, Paul Harvey Atkins; and her dear two sisters, Shirley Marie Brown and Barbara Louise Chesebro. She is survived by her sister, Betty Lucile Hull Cooper of Janesville; her twin children, Paul (Donna) Sheldon Atkins and Patricia Sue Atkins (Eric Siegel); her two grandchildren, Lesley and Aaron Siegel (Olya Gurevich); her two great-granddaughters; and her nieces and nephews.
