BELOIT—Beloit College and the city of Beloit on Wednesday were awarded a $1,009,158 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to fund the college's Rock River walk extension, according to a release from the school.

“We are thrilled to get this key piece of funding in place, which will further cement this facility's role as a city and college resource,” said Beloit College President Scott Bierman in a written statement. “This will, in essence, help extend Riverside Park south and offer our community easier access to the river, the park and downtown Beloit.”

The grant is part of the federal Transportation Alternatives Program and will extend riverside access to the outer walls of the planned redevelopment of Alliant Energy's Blackhawk Generating Station, according to the release.

The college intends to turn the area into a waterfront activity and recreation center, according to the release.

“The City of Beloit appreciates the DOT's support for an important element of the revitalization project Beloit College is undertaking,” Beloit City Manager Larry Arft said in the written statement.
