Youth baseball: 9U team eliminated in semifinal
JEFFERSONTOWN, Ky.—After starting regional play 5-0, Janesville’s 9U youth baseball team found its match in the form of undefeated Mattoon (Illinois), which beat the locals 6-5 Sunday to eliminate Janesville from the Ohio Valley Regional in the semifinal round.
Janesville entered the final inning with a one-run lead after scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth to answer the two go-ahead runs Mattoon scored in the top of the frame.
Jake Schaffner started the fifth inning rally for Janesville when he reached on an error with one out. He then stole second base and moved to third on a single by Ian Perkins.
With Schaffner and Perkins in scoring position, Keagan Clark sent a double to left field to give Janesville the late lead. Clark had two hits and three RBI in the game.
After Mattoon reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth, Janesville drummed up a rally that saw the winning run reach second base. Brent Klukas singled ahead of a Jake Ryan walk, then a wild pitch put the runners at second and third with two outs. A fly ball to right field ended the game to send Mattoon through to the regional final.
“While it was a disappointing loss, it was a great season, and I’m very proud of the way our team played all year, especially in this tournament,” coach Matt Stried said.
