LaVerne M. Sandgren, age 92, of Janesville, died on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Cedar Crest. She was born in Montrose, SD, on April 7, 1922, the daughter of Louis and Clara (Hetland) Howe. She graduated from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD, in 1944, and married Rev. Ralph C. Sandgren in Colton, SD, on August 13, 1950. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2001. LaVerne worked as a social worker and was a devoted Pastor’s wife and mother. She worked for Lutheran Social Services in Sioux City, IA, from 1944 to 1947, Lutheran Student Services, Madison from 1948 to 1950, the Board of Charities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church from 1950 to 1953, and ECHO in Janesville from 1974 to 1990. She received the YWCA Women of Distinction Award, and a Certificate of Appreciation from the Literacy Council. LaVerne’s main focus in life was to serve God by loving and serving others. Times when she was surrounded by her family were most precious to her. She was an active member of the community through St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and the Choral Union. She expressed her creative nature through crafts, gardening and other hobbies.
LaVerne is survived by her three sons: Paul (Judith) Sandgren of Delafield, David (Mary) Sandgren of Racine, and Daniel (Sheila) Sandgren of Duluth, GA; eight grandchildren: Andrew (Carly), Melissa (Jesse Pruett), Michael, John, Sara, Matthew, Emily, and Benjamin; many extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant son, James; and two brothers, Duane and Verlyn.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, at ST. PETER’S LUTHERAN CHURCH with Rev. Bruce Gray and Rev. Dean Marin officiating. A visitation will be held on Monday from 9:30 until 11 a.m. at the CHURCH. Lasting Memorials may be made to ECHO, Agrace HospiceCare, Inc., Janesville, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church or St. John’s Lutheran Church.
