MCHENRY COUNTY--Although it's still summer, some Illinois highway and public works departments are trying to secure salt supplies for winter, according to a story in the Northwest Herald.

Summer is traditionally when many municipalities purchase road salt through an Illinois state agency that obtains supplies in bulk to lower costs. But earlier this month, the Illinois Department of Central Management Services notified governments around the state that no salt companies had submitted bids to supply them with salt for the coming winter.

The McHenry County Division of Transportation was one of the governments that did not get a bid. According to the department's maintenance superintendent, the county has 5,500 tons of salt on hand, but can use between 8,000 and 10,000 in a typical winter.

A few governments, like McHenry County, are bidding solo to try to improve its odds.
