Janesville 13U team wins Ohio Valley Regional
The bats belonging to Janesville's 13U baseball team came to life in a big way Sunday, the biggest day of the season so far for the coaches and players.
Janesville beat Westmont (Illinois) 14-1 in game one to clinch a spot in the championship game.
The local team scored 10 runs in the second inning. All baserunners reached with two outs in the inning on five hits, three hit batters and two bases on balls, including a two-RBI single to left field by Ross March to score the fourth and fifth runs of the frame.
Ben Coulter, Jacob Lynch and Dan Blomgren also had run-scoring hits in the inning.
March also pitched a complete game in the five-inning contest.
The offensive barrage continued in the regional final game, an 11-2 win over Jasper (Indiana), a team Janesville had beaten previously in the tournament.
It was a 3-2 game until the fourth inning when Janesville took advantage of shoddy defensive plays to score eight runs. Three players who bunted reached base in the inning.
“We just wanted to play small ball and put pressure on their defense, and they couldn't make the plays,” assistant coach Vic Herbst said.
Jake Campbell and Tanner Williams had two-run hits in the inning.
“We had a monster inning, and it took the pressure off us,” Herbst said.
The 13U team now heads to the World Series in Glen Allen, Virginia, which runs from Aug. 16 to 23.
“It's going to be a great time and very exciting for the boys,” Herbst said. “We're looking forward to representing the city and Janesville Youth Baseball.”

After tournament officials suspended its game Saturday due to bad weather, Janesville's 14U squad couldn't rally from a 7-4 final-inning deficit and lost to Owensboro (Kentucky) 8-5.
The local team had beaten Owensboro 2-0 earlier in the tournament and hoped to win the second game without sending Nick Cramer to pitch. Owensboro didn't cooperate with the plan.
It scored four runs in the first two innings and forced Cramer into the game. Cramer, who pitched the shutout in the first game between the teams, didn't enjoy the same success Saturday.
After a one-out error in the top of the fifth, Owensboro had four hits in a row to score three runs and take the lead, 7-4.
“After he took care of them the first time, they made some adjustments on him to get those runs in the fifth,” coach Tom Davey said.
Janesville finished with a 2-2 record in the Ohio Valley Regional and a 27-6 record overall.
