George Nordeng, Janesville, WI (1927 - 2014)
March 9, 1927 - July 25, 2014
George Nordeng, age 87, of Janesville, died on Friday, July 25, 2014, at Mercy Hospital & Trauma Center, Janesville. He was born in Orfordville, on March 9, 1927, the son of Oscar and Hannah (Olson) Nordeng. He married Dorothy Holden in 1944, and later married Lucille M. Bahr-Hofmeister on June 16, 1979, in First Lutheran Church. George served in U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He had been employed by Sears, Ace Hardware on River St., and owned the Ace Hardware in Evansville, until his retirement. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, VFW Post 1621, the American Legion, Evansville, and the Commercial Travelers.
He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting for pheasants, ducks and deer, and fishing for several species, especially trout. He was an avid Badgers fan and followed the Packers and Brewers closely. He often remembered fondly his years as a manager in Janesville's Little League. He was fiercely proud of his Norwegian heritage, and even more proud to be a patriotic American. He treasured his recent trip to the war memorials in Washington, D.C. with the Vets Roll organization. More than anything else, he was a family man, always full of good humor, sensible advice and, most of all, reassuring love.
George is survived by his wife, Lucille Nordeng; three children: Richard Nordeng of Madison, Susan (Pat) Carlton of Niceville, FL, and Jeffrey Nordeng of Madison; two step children, Eric (Elizabeth) Hofmeister of San Diego, CA, and John (Lisa) Hofmeister of Madison; four grandchildren: Eric (Kristine) Nordeng of Middleton, Bradley (Marie) Nordeng of Madison, Gregory (Olivia) Nordeng of Fitchburg, and Patrick Carlton of Tallahassee, FL; four great-grandchildren: Ivory Nordeng, Taylor Nordeng, Azalea Nordeng, and Dane Nordeng; three step grandchildren: Sarah Hofmeister, Anne Peyton Hofmeister and Thomas Hofmeister; and three siblings: James (Carol) Nordeng of Tomahawk, David (Ruth) Nordeng of Footville, and Martha Magee of Janesville. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three siblings: Oscar “Joseph,” Charles and John Nordeng.
