July 14, 2014

Charlene Joyce Melvin Krause rounded the mountain for home on July 14, 2014. Charlene was born to Elida (Everson) and Mariam Philo Melvin and grew up working in her parent's grocery stores in La Farge, and Viola. When she was nine, her dad announced that he was bringing home a surprise. Alas, it was not a Boston Terrier puppy as she had hoped, but her beloved baby brother, Paul. Charlene graduated valedictorian from Viola High School and attended UW Lacrosse. She settled in Janesville, raising her two daughters with Harlan Krause. A natural teacher, Charlene taught physical education at Marshall Junior High School. She later began pioneering work with her dear friend, Connie Hake, teaching very young special needs children. Always an advocate, Charlene fought for the rights of these children to enjoy a quality education and full participation in community life. Charlene was a YWCA Woman of Distinction, CAROL award winner and past president of the Council for Exceptional Children.

Charlene's greatest gift, however, was the love of family and friends. She is warmly remembered by her two daughters, Susan (Tammi Droessler) and Lisa (Wally) Mazurek; grandsons, Walter Jr. and Charles; cousins: Ruth Melvin Clark, Lois Melvin Anderson and Charles (Leora Koch) Melvin. Charlene will also be missed by friends Harlene Ames, Linda Lynch and Janet Spratlin.

Please join us for a Celebration of Life Picnic on Saturday, Aug. 16 at RIVERSIDE PARK (south pavilion) at 11 a.m. It would be great to see you.
