Janesville’s American Legion team ended its season Saturday after a pair of losses to Waterford and Genoa City in a state regional qualifying tournament.

Waterford scored in every inning through the seventh in a 9-4 decision, but Post 205 made it 5-4 after scoring four runs in the top of the fifth. Despite the hiccup, Waterford stuck with its starting pitcher, who didn’t allow another run the rest of the way.

In the second game, Janesville staked starting pitcher Chase Nyborg to a 4-2 lead after a three-run third inning and held the advantage until the eighth.

“Chase pitched awesome and gave a championship effort,” assistant coach Kerry Michaels said.

Nyborg gave way to Colin Frey in the eighth, who ran into tough luck when a seeing-eye single snuck through the infield to score two runs that gave Genoa City a one-run lead.

Janesville scored in the top of the ninth to tie it, but another unfortunate break ended the game.

Frey induced another ground ball that could’ve turned into a double play to end the frame and extend the game, but the Janesville defense couldn’t turn it in time as the winning run scored.
