The Janesville 14U squad got off to as good of start as possible in its opening game of the Ohio Valley Regional here Thursday.

Nick Cramer scattered four hits and drove in a run with a single to lead Janesville to a 2-0 victory over Owensboro (Kentucky) in the opening game of pool play.

“Cramer pitched a great game,” Coach Tom Davey said. “We knew Owensboro was a strong team. They finished second in this tournament last year. They're strong across the board.

“Cramer is a testament on how you pitch.”

While Cramer was shutting down the Owensboro offense, Janesville made the most of seven walks and just three hits.

The local team took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Luke Malmanger singled and after a walk, Jaydn Ellis advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Malmanger scored on a groundout to the right side by Brodie Klukas.

Two back-to-back walks, a wild pitch, and Cramer's single brought home Caleb Broege in the fifth for Janesville's final run.

“This was a tough one,” Davey said. “Even though we struck out only four times, we didn't hit the ball hard.

“This was a big win. Now we'll be a little more relaxed.”

Janesville finishes pool play today with a 12:30 p.m. game against Casper (Indiana) and an 8 p.m. game against Henderson (Kentucky).

Bailey leads 13U to win

Janesville's 13U baseball tournament team opened Ohio Valley Regional pool play with a win Thursday at Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

Jordan Bailey had an RBI triple and pitched three scoreless innings in relief to lift Janesville to a 3-1 win over Franklin-Simpson, Indiana.

Janesville got on the board early. Dan Blomgren, the winning pitcher, singled to start the bottom of the first and scored on Bailey's triple. Bailey scored on Jake Campbell's sacrifice fly.

“Getting those two runs early was big,” Janesville coach Jeff Endicott said. “It took a little bit of pressure off and allowed the kids to relax.

“We only had three hits for the game, but the way Blomgren and Bailey threw, it didn't matter. They both pitched great.”

Franklin-Simpson cut the lead to one in the third, but Janesville got an insurance run in the sixth on Jacob Lynch's sacrifice fly.

Janesville wraps up pool play today with games against Jasper, Indiana, and host Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

11U errors lead to loss

Errors spoiled Janesville's first game at the 11U Ohio Valley Regional baseball tournament at Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

Janesville had seven errors in an 11-4 loss to Hikes Point, Kentucky, in the first game of pool play.

Janesville cut a 3-0 deficit to one run with two runs in the bottom of the third, but Hike Point scored five runs in the fifth to pull away. Hikes Point scored 11 runs on only five hits.

“Too many errors and too many walks,” Janesville coach Doug Coulter said. “That was the difference.

“We were probably a better team than they were, but we just gave them way too many unearned runs.”

Kai Kerl and Nolan Larson had two hits each for Janesville and both drove in a run.

Janesville plays Newburgh, Indiana, today at noon, and host Elizabethtown at 6 p.m.
