Police: Beloit woman found dead of apparent gunshot wound
BELOIT—Police say they suspect homicide after they found a woman dead of an apparent gunshot wound in Beloit early Sunday morning.
According to a release from the Beloit Police Department, police responded at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday to a report of a person lying in the street at Woodard and White avenues, just north of the Beloit College campus.
Police at the scene found a 44-year-old Beloit woman with an apparent gunshot wound. The woman, whose name has not been released, was transported to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, Janesville, according to the release.
She was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.
Police said the incident is being looked at as a homicide, but it does not appear to have been a random shooting.
Beloit police detectives have identified the woman, and are working to notify her family. An investigation is ongoing.
Police said they'll likely not release the woman's name or other details in her death until Monday, according to an email from Beloit Police Capt. Dan Risse.
