Legion baseball: Janesville into Schluetter Classic semifinals
Needing to win to advance to play Sunday in the Schluetter Classic tournament in Plover, Janesville’s Post 205 American Legion baseball team did the job early, beating Manitowoc 13-3 in its first game of the day Saturday.
A six-run second inning gave starting pitcher Chase Nyborg—who didn’t know he would be pitching until minutes before the start of the game—plenty of cushion to work with.
“He did a great job for us for not knowing he’d have to start,” coach Bob Schenck said. “He didn’t allow any baserunners until the fifth inning and didn’t walk anybody.”
Alex Faust had a pair of singles in the second and drove in four of the six runs in the frame. Will Theisen went 4-for-4 in the game with 2 RBI and three runs scored.
“He played through some knee pain and just gutted it out for us,” Schenck said.
In game two Saturday, Post 205 faced the consequences of having to reshuffle its pitching staff. Five players pitched in a 15-7 loss to Green Bay Southwest, and Janesville made six errors in the game.
After a 47-minute first inning that ended with Janesville holding a 6-5 lead, Green Bay Southwest’s pitcher bounced back and shut down Post 205 through the final five innings while his offensive teammates kept tacking on runs in every inning but the third.
Janesville plays in the tournament semifinals at noon today against Sheboygan, Plover or Chippewa Falls.
