WHITEWATER—Authorities say four people are in custody after a shooting incident reported early Friday at apartments near the UW-Whitewater campus.

According to a release from the Whitewater Police Department, police responded to a report of gunshots at about 4 a.m. Friday at University Gardens Apartments, 370 N. Tratt St., Whitewater. The apartments are two blocks west of campus.

Witnesses said several people were fighting in a hallway at the apartments. During the fight, witnesses said a shot was fired.

Police later Friday located and arrested four people who police say were involved in the shooting, including two people the Walworth County Sheriff's Office pulled over in a vehicle at an undisclosed location on Highway 12.

Deputies recovered a gun from the vehicle, according to the release.

The four people, whose names police have not released, were arrested on suspicion of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, party to first-degree recklessly endangering safety, disorderly conduct while armed and party to disorderly conduct while armed.

The shooting apparently followed an altercation Thursday evening or early Friday, and police said the incident was “not a random act of violence.”

The Whitewater Police Department on Friday did not answer calls by The Gazette seeking details including the names of those arrested in the shooting.

Whitewater police, UW-Whitewater Police Services and the sheriff's office continue to investigate the incident, and police say more charges are possible.
