Newcomer wins women's county golf championship
JANESVILLE—Melissa Ellis didn’t enter her first Rock County Women’s Championship golf tournament with any expectations of contending.
On Sunday at Riverside Golf Course, she surprised even herself.
Ellis shot a 6-over-par 78 in the second round for a two-day total of 160, winning the county championship by two strokes.
“It’s exciting and unexpected,” Ellis said. “I didn’t even expect to place. I haven’t really played competitive golf since college.
“So it was cool. It was fun to play competitive golf again.”
Ellis, a Kenosha Tremper graduate, moved to Janesville last year for a job. She hadn’t played a competitive round in about two years, when she played for UW-Whitewater.
She sat in second place after Saturday’s first round, trailing 2014 Janesville Parker High graduate Taylor Wyss by three strokes. Wyss shot a second-round 83 to take second. Her Vikings teammate, Kailey McDade, who will be a senior this year, was third.
But Ellis never focused on going low in the second round in order to make a charge toward the lead.
“I was just staying relaxed, enjoying the weather and having fun,” she said. “I was not thinking too much.
“I had so many bad shots (Saturday). I actually played well through 14 but screwed up the last couple of holes. So I was just trying to stay even-keeled today.”
Wyss was the net winner of the championship flight.
Janesville’s Lora Riley took first-flight championship honors thanks to a second-round 86 that gave her a two-day total of 136.
