Freedom Fest 2014 is now behind us. The event had another record-breaking year. I want to thank the better than 500 volunteers, as well as the 20 churches who served together as one.

I am especially grateful to Faith Community Church and its 50 volunteers and financial support and the Orchard View Alliance Church, who oversaw the Day of Compassion clothing giveaway. I would also want to tip the hat to the 60 sponsors who carried much of the financial burden of the project. Without their help, Freedom Fest could not be a free event.

This year we had some 20 different service agencies help, including the Blackhawk Community Credit Union, which oversaw the free food giveaway. Once again, Mercy Health System put on a great free clinic. Hundreds of people received health screenings, and children received free bicycle helmets. How neat is that?

I would be remiss if I didn't commend the city of Janesville, the Janesville Police Department, the Janesville Fire Department, RECAP, as well as the Rock County Sheriff's Office. I couldn't ask for the city and county to be more helpful or cooperative.

True, Freedom Fest is hosted by New Life. At the same time, this giant patriotic rally is bigger than any one entity. It is an example of what can happen when a community comes together to serve, to care, to be one. Freedom Fest is a picture of Janesville at its best.
