Boat jumper in town

Elaine Kanelos, Lake Geneva's first female mail boat jumper, will be in town this weekend to sign copies of her new book, “Mail Jumper! The Story of the First Mail Girl.”

Kanelos, who now lives in Vail, Colorado, will sign books from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday and Sunday, July 11 and 13, at the Riviera docks, 812 Wrigley Drive, Lake Geneva.

She'll also sign books for passengers who ride the mail boat Saturday, July 12, and from 5-7 p.m. that day at Pier 290, 1 Liechty Drive, Williams Bay. A drawing will be held on the mail boat for a free book.

“Mail Jumper!” costs $12 and is available at the Lake Geneva Cruise Line gift shop and Pier 290. For information, call the cruise line at 800-558-5911 or visit cruiselakegeneva.com.

A tale of three fairs

This summer's festival season continues this weekend with two popular annual fetes: Madison's Art Fair on the Square and the Jefferson County Fair.

The 56th annual Art Fair on the Square, sponsored by the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, will bring more than 450 artists to Capitol Square in a smorgasbord of art, music and outdoor dining. Some 200,000 people are expected to walk the circuit Saturday and Sunday, July 12-13, to see everything from sculpture to handmade clothing.

Hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

Another festival, Art Fair Off the Square, runs concurrently along Martin Luther King Boulevard and near the Monona Terrace Convention Center.

Meanwhile, the Jefferson County Fair kicked off Wednesday and runs through Sunday, July 13, at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 503 N. Jackson Ave.

Besides the exhibits, animals, local bands and carnival, the fair offers several music headliners: Colt Ford and John Pardi on Friday and Justin Moore with Megan Ruger on Saturday.
