Mathews' slam lifts Beloit over Burlington
Ryan Mathews erased all of Beloit’s bad memories of the Burlington Bees on Tuesday night.
The Snappers had lost eight straight games to their Midwest League rivals, but Mathews hit a sixth-inning grand slam to deliver a 5-3 victory at Pohlman Field.
The game was tied, 1-1, when Beloit got a one-out single from B.A. Vollmuth, and the bases were loaded thanks to a hit batter and a walk with two outs. Mathews belted his grand slam to center field.
It was Mathews’ fifth home run this year. He drove in all five Snappers runs, giving him 23 RBI this season.
Burlington scored twice in the top of the eighth, but Beloit held on for its third straight win.
Reliever Brendan McCurry got his first win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The teams play again tonight.
