JANESVILLE—A man was assaulted and robbed around 4 p.m. Sunday while locking up All Saints Anglican Catholic Church, 169 S. Academy St., according to a police report.

Police say Kevin Nelson was hit over the head from behind with an unknown object after locking the door of the church. Two people held him against the wall and took his wallet, watch and crucifix necklace, valued at a total of $980, he said.

“I'd been down to that church probably 100 times by myself and never had a problem,” he said.

Nelson is the assistant organist at the church during winter and fall. He is the full time organist in the summer.

Nelson's glasses were chipped when he was held against a brick wall, but he was not treated for injuries. The crucifix necklace, worth about $250, was the most significant loss, Nelson said. The watch was valued at $400 and the wallet $330.

Nelson described one suspect as being a black male in his mid 20s, standing between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10. The suspect had a high, tight haircut and was wearing red Nike shoes with a white stripe, he said.

No arrests have been made.
